How to Engrave Coordinates on Jewelry — Without Getting the Location Wrong
Coordinates can turn a place into a private reference: where you met, where someone grew up, where a proposal happened or where a memory lives. The difficult part is not finding numbers. It is making sure the numbers point to the place you actually mean.
Choose the exact location first
Do not begin by copying coordinates from a search result. First decide what physical point represents the memory. A venue, home, park, beach or viewpoint can cover a large area, and different sources may return different points within it.
Open a reliable map, place the pin where you intend, and visually confirm that the location matches the memory.
Understand latitude and longitude
Coordinate pairs normally contain latitude first and longitude second. Latitude describes north-south position; longitude describes east-west position.
Many maps show coordinates in decimal degrees, for example in a form like 59.12345, 18.12345. That example is illustrative only. Use the actual coordinates from the location you have verified.
Do not lose the minus sign
A negative sign can change the hemisphere and therefore the location. When copying coordinates, preserve every minus sign and digit. Treat the pair as exact data rather than decorative text.
Decide how much precision you need
More decimal places generally describe a more precise point, but they also create a longer engraving. The right balance depends on the available engraving area and whether the exact point or the broader place carries the meaning.
If the full coordinates feel too long, consider a city, neighborhood or short place name instead of trimming digits without understanding what the change does.
Verify the coordinates twice
- Copy the coordinates from the map point you selected.
- Paste the complete pair back into a map search.
- Confirm that the resulting pin returns to the intended place.
- Compare the final text with the personalization preview before ordering.
For an emotionally important location, asking another person to verify the pair can add a useful second check.
Coordinates for anniversaries and relationships
A place can represent a first meeting, proposal, wedding, first home or a trip that changed the relationship. If the location is part of an anniversary gift, see Anniversary Engraving Ideas.
Coordinates for remembrance
A meaningful location can also represent a family home, favorite place or somewhere connected to a person you remember. When using coordinates for memorial jewelry, choose the location with care and confirm that the wearer will understand or appreciate the reference. See our Memorial Jewelry guide.
When a place name may be better
Coordinates are not automatically more meaningful than words. If the location itself is the important part and privacy is not necessary, a short place name can be clearer and easier to read.

Check the product before ordering
Character limits, supported symbols, line breaks and engraving areas vary by product. Confirm the current options on the individual product page and review any available preview carefully.
